Cornice
Terms of Service
Effective June 1, 2026 · Last updated June 1, 2026
By using cornicenyc.com or the Cornice service (the "Service") you agree to these Terms. Please read them carefully. If you don't agree, do not use the Service. These Terms incorporate our Privacy Policy and Refund Policy.
1. Who can use the Service
You must be at least 18 and able to enter a binding contract. By signing up you represent you meet those criteria. If you use the Service on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind it.
2. What Cornice is
Cornice is a compliance-intelligence platform. We aggregate, organize, and translate publicly-available NYC and NY State building data so owners, managers, and brokers can understand a property's regulatory exposure. The Service includes lookups, deadlines, PDF reports, alerts, and a document vault.
Cornice does not perform inspections, repairs, or filings. Where we identify a violation we may point you to vetted licensed specialists (QEWIs, master plumbers, QEIs, energy consultants, expediters), but Cornice does not dispatch, coordinate, supervise, or charge for that licensed work. You engage those specialists directly under your own contract.
3. Accounts
Sign-in is magic-link based; you are responsible for the security of the email account you use to sign in. Notify us immediately at hello@cornicenyc.com if you suspect unauthorized access.
4. Plans, billing, refunds
Free, Basic, Pro, Business, and Enterprise tiers are described on the Pricing page. Paid plans renew automatically until canceled. Monthly plans include a 14-day trial on first signup; yearly plans skip the trial and carry a 10% discount over equivalent monthly billing. Refund terms are in the Refund Policy. Enterprise terms are governed by the signed order form, if any.
5. Acceptable use
Don't use the Service to: (a) violate any law; (b) infringe anyone's rights; (c) probe, scan, or test our infrastructure or attempt to bypass rate limits, authentication, or paywalls; (d) scrape, mirror, or republish substantial portions of the Service; (e) misrepresent your affiliation with anyone. We may suspend or terminate accounts that abuse the Service.
6. Public data; no warranty of accuracy
Information shown about specific buildings is sourced from public NYC and NY State datasets and reproduced as-is or with plain-English summaries. We do not guarantee that any specific record is current, complete, or accurate. You should verify any material decision against the underlying agency record (we link to it on every detail page).
Compliance deadlines we display (FISP, LL84, LL87, LL97, LL152, boiler, elevator, etc.) are computed from each building's public attributes using best-effort assumptions. Cycle staggering (e.g., LL152 Community District, FISP sub-cycle) may shift your actual deadline. Always confirm filing dates against DOB NOW and your engineer of record.
7. Specialist recommendations
The vendor directory and specialist recommendations are provided for convenience. We do not warrant the work, licensure, insurance, or fitness for purpose of any specialist listed. You are responsible for vetting any professional you engage.
8. Your content
You retain ownership of files you upload to the Document Vault. You grant Cornice the limited license needed to store, display, transmit, and back up those files for the purpose of operating the Service. We do not access vault contents except to deliver the Service or as required by law.
9. IP
Cornice, the Cornice logo, and the Service's code, design, content, and PDFs (other than the underlying public data) are our intellectual property. You may not copy, modify, or create derivative works except as expressly permitted.
10. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. Cornice is not a law firm, engineering firm, compliance auditor, or licensed professional. Nothing on the Service is legal, engineering, financial, or compliance advice. Always consult licensed professionals for matters that require them.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Cornice and its affiliates will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues. Our total liability for any claim arising out of the Service is limited to the greater of $100 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold Cornice harmless from claims arising out of your use of the Service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any third-party rights, including any licensed professional you engage as a result of using the Service.
13. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time (see /account). We may suspend or terminate access for breach of these Terms or for legal/regulatory reasons. On termination your subscription ends at the end of the paid period; refunds (if any) follow the Refund Policy.
14. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of state and federal courts located in New York County, New York.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. For material changes we will post a notice on this page and (for account holders) email a notice at least 14 days before the changes take effect. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
